Can a function be well approximated by neglecting high energy frequencies? In dimension one, there is a positive answer in every p norm. In dimension two or higher, the question turns out to be a tricky one. A conjecture was initially proposed but, despite encouraging partial results, it was eventually disproved by Fefferman. I will sketch the history of the problem and Fefferman's counterexample.
