2019 Hertz Fellows: Mathematics Students Nitya Mani & Nina Zubrilina

Stanford Mathematics majors, Nitya Mani and Nina Zubrilina, have been named 2019 Hertz Fellows.

Nitya Mani, a senior majoring in mathematics and computer science, was selected for her work in exploring the underlying properties of networks, called graphs, which characterize many aspects of modern life. Nitya also works with problems that reside at the intersection of mathematics and computer science.  Nitya’s previous honors include the Goldwater Scholarship, the Karl Menger Award from the American Mathematical Society, and honorable mention for the Alice T. Schafer Mathematics Prize. Nitya will continue her studies in mathematics as she pursues doctoral studies at MIT.

Nina Zubrilina, a senior majoring in mathematics, was selected for her work in using mathematics to deepen our biological understanding of how life on Earth grows, branches, and blossoms.  Nina wrote an original paper on sphere packing while she was interning at Microsoft Research.  In addition to being named a 2019 Soros New American Fellow, Nina’s other honors include the Goldwater Scholarship and honorable mention for the Alice T. Schafer Mathematics Prize.  Nina plans to continue her study in mathematics as she pursues doctoral studies at Princeton.
