Mary Sunseri and Harold Bacon Mathematics Teaching Award

This award was established in 2023 thanks to a generous endowment from Professors Jerrold Grossman and Suzanne Zeitman in memory of their daughter Pamela Grossman.

The award recognizes outstanding teaching by lecturers, postdoctoral researchers, Szegö Assistant Professors, and tenure-track assistant professors.

The award is named in honor of two phenomenal teachers in Stanford Math history, Professors Mary Sunseri and Harold Bacon. Harold Bacon arrived at Stanford as a freshman in 1924 and never left. Mary Sunseri won multiple university-level awards for her excellent teaching, and was chosen as the Senior Class Day speaker in 1984.

They each taught large introductory math courses every quarter for more than 40 years, and are likely to be the all time record holders for teaching the most Stanford students.
