Thomas Weighill (MGGG Redistricting Lab, Tufts University)

The MGGG Redistricting Lab is a non-partisan research organization based at Tufts University doing research into the mathematical and computational aspects of redistricting, elections and civil rights. In this talk, I will give a brief overview of the challenges and opportunities in the area of redistricting and some of the ways our group is addressing them. I will then focus on one of my current projects where we use ideas from topological data analysis together with Markov chain sampling to study the partisan baseline for various scales of redistricting. This project is joint work with Moon Duchin (MGGG Redistricting Lab) and Tom Needham (Florida State University).
