Every real algebraic variety is enclosed in its complexification, the complex variety defined by the same equations.  The complex environment generates various features which are invisible from a purely real viewpoint, and these in turn have profound effects on the behavior of the real variety.  In the talk, phenomena of this kind will be discussed.

Note : this was initially planned as a Friday symplectic geometry seminar, but it is now moved to the Thursday colloquium.
