The Jones Polynomial

The Jones polynomial is a very powerful and simple to define knot invariant, which can be used to distinguish all prime knots with at most 9 crossings. In particular, it can tell apart the left- and right-handed trefoils, which older invariants such as π₁ or the Alexander polynomial fail to do.
