The Steklov eigenvalue problem has recently become a hot topic in spectral geometry.  I will explain what the problem is, and overview the latest advances in the subject, with emphasis on spectral asymptotics for domains with corners.  This  problem is linked to some old questions in hydrodynamics, as well as to the study of quantum graphs.  Applications to the inverse spectral problem will also be discussed.  The talk is based on results obtained in collaboration with Levitin, Parnovski, Sher,  as well as on a joint work in progress with these authors plus Krymski.
