Given an automorphic form, its L-function has a functional equation. Conversely one may ask whether an L-function with a functional equation comes from an automorphic form. I will explain and survey such converse theorems and focus in particular on ideas inspired by Langlands' programme "beyond endoscopy" to classify functorial lifts.
