“Hatcher’s Construction and Higher G-torsion”

In 1975 Allen Hatcher gave an elegant elementary construction of the exotic smooth disk bundles which were known to exist by deep results of Borel and Waldhausen. It took many years to generalize this construction to other types of smooth bundles. The first case was lens space bundles, in 2013. This was joint work with Tom Goodwillie and Chris Ohrt.

In this talk, I will review the history, go over Hatcher’s remarkable construction, the extension to lens space bundles and give a brief description of a new construction. This is joint work with Goodwillie, which generalizes this result to smooth G-bundles for all finite groups G.
