How to Declare Honors

Submissions for declaring honors for the 2026-2027 academic year are now closed.

Timeline

Students should wait to apply for and declare honors until winter quarter of their junior year, but no later than the end of May in spring quarter of junior year.

Before you apply to the program, students should have the following:

Coursework completion deadlines:

  • Math 120 and Math 171 should be completed by end of Fall of junior year
  • At least 2 of the Area III classes should be completed by Spring of junior year

GPA Requirement

  • Honors students must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 across all Math courses by the end of Spring quarter of junior year to be approved into the program.

Steps to Declare Honors

Submissions for declaring honors for the 2026-2027 academic year are now closed. Please check back at the end of Fall quarter when applications for 2027-2028 open.

Advising

Before you declare honors in Axess, set up meeting with the Math faculty member you’re interested in working with. If you do not know whom you’d like to work with, talk with your major advisor or the Director of Undergraduate Studies for guidance. Print out a transcript to bring to the meeting and share your interests and ideas for your thesis.

Important note: Any subsequent substantive change in the topic focus of the thesis must be communicated to the Student Services Office and approved by the DUS before such a change occurs.
