Graduates Honored with Mathematics Distinguished Service Award

Nitya Mani and Eric Bates honored with Mathematics Distinguished Service Award

For the first time the Mathematics Department is awarding the Mathematics Distinguished Service Award to two graduates. This award has been established to recognize students who, through their service, have made outstanding contributions to the department, their fellow students, and the University as a whole.  This year’s recipients are Erik Bates and Nitya Mani.

Erik, graduating from our PhD program, is being recognized for his service to the department as our Graduate Student Wellness Ambassador and his excellent contributions as a teaching assistant. Later this summer, Erik will move across the Bay to begin a post-doctoral position at UC Berkeley.

Nitya, graduating with her Bachelor’s in Math and Computer Science,  is being recognized for her service to the department as the Director of the SUMO tutoring program, for piloting the undergraduate Peer Advisor Program, for coordinating many events for our undergraduate students, and fostering a sense of community in the department. This is one of many honors Nitya has received through the years of her undergraduate studies at Stanford.  She will continue her graduate studies in Mathematics at MIT.

Both students will be recognized at the Mathematics Commencement ceremony, Sunday, June 16, 2019.
